From a very young age, when I pursued a career as a dancer, using the human body to express emotion that transcends words seemed natural and important, a need almost.
Since then, through my visual arts journey, I always come back to the enigma of the human condition and searching for ways to find the right voice to express it in some way.
The ideas around my recent Flightless Series have been brewing in the background for some time. The wings signify the futility of our search for divine intervention and bestowing a spiritual meaning or power to objects and deities we hope will help save us. Putting our faith in things that promise salvation but, to me, are as hollow as strapping on some gossamer wings and hoping to fly.
I hope they communicate something about fragility and the struggle of being human and that we may never really find what we're looking for in a source outside of ourselves.
I studied fine art when I lived in Australia during the 1990s where I learned a lot about using different materials, but I have always particularly loved the immediacy of drawing and especially life drawing. I like to be guided by the accidental things that can happen by combining different mediums and enjoy discovering new approaches, although I will never tire of the joy of simply drawing with a small burnt stick!
